Comparative Subtitling Project
For its International Comparative Subtitling Project on subtitling practice throughout the world ESIST collected data in the year 2000.
The material is available to researchers, students and people interested in studying the different subtitling conventions and standards used for different media in different language communities.
Subtitling companies and broadcasters from all over the world were invited to participate in the project. Each institution submitted its own subtitled version of three short segments. A total of 48 different institutions in Europe and the rest of the world took part in the project. Subtitling files and tapes were returned in 18 languages from 25 different countries. The broadcasters and companies also completed a short questionnaire, the results of which will provide further insight into various subtitling approaches.
The following countries took part in the study:
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Croatia, Denmark, England, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Holland, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Scotland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Wales.
